Editorial Review:

A collection of the world’s most beloved fables
Jean de la Fontaine popularized some of our most loved proverbial tales, including "The Hare and the Tortoise" and "The Hen Who Laid Golden Eggs," transforming the world’s great fables into charming works of astonishing originality, wit, and verve. James Michie’s earthy translations capture the friendly brio, nimble comedy, and jaunty wisdom of the original. * Black-and-white line drawings by J. J. Grandville introduce each fable

Reader Reviews for Selected Fables (Penguin Classics):
|
Customer Rating: Summary: Selected Fables help learning written French Comment: Enjoyable stories that aim to teach life lessons. Entertaining and interesting. I highly recommend for those learning French at an intermediate level.
Customer Rating: Summary: great book for dual language Comment: This book is in French and English. It is a nice tool to assist your knowledge with both languages or for intermediate learners in French (or English).
I highly recommend it to every fable lovers out there.
Customer Rating: Summary: Interesting Short Stories Comment: These fables are humorous and interesting. After I finish this book, my grand-children will enjoy the English, which is suitable for anyone above 8-10 years old. As with fables in general, there are lessons to be learned. I like dual language books.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fables Comment: Fables are entertaining and interesting, reasonably easy to understand for the intermediate French student. Not being familiar with De La Fontaine I was hoping for a short story format, and was surprised to find all of the fables in verse (poetry). All in all, a good book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Delightful Comment: This book contains many short french stories that are sure to be a big help to any beginner through intermediate level student. It enriches french vocabulary while simultaneously getting the reader used to translating in a non-strict, understandable manner. The opposite page with the english translation is a big help when one gets stuck on a new word!
